Liz Peterson:
That was really mind opening for me to know that it’s not just support in the moment, that they’re actually supporting us and setting up things in our lives before we actually have something happen.

Announcer: Welcome to Exploring the Mystical Side of Life with your host, Linda Lang.

Linda Lang:
This is Linda Lang from www.ThoughtChange.com. We are Exploring the Mystical Side of Life once again this week. If you enjoy our conversations, remember to subscribe, share with a friend. Today, we are talking intuition and spirit communication. I have intuitive healer and oracle, Liz Peterson with me. Welcome, Liz.

Liz Peterson:
Thank you, Linda. Thanks for having me on the show. It’s a pleasure.

Linda Lang:
If we’re talking on the topic of intuition, how did that start to unravel for you in your life?

Liz Peterson:
It really started at a very young age. I was very intuitive when I was little. I could read a room. I could read the emotions of my parents and the people around me. I saw spirits. I remember waking up one night when I was young, and my sister’s in my bed, you know, were on left and right sides of the center window. And there was a white woman sitting on my sister’s pillow looking out the window, and the moonlight was shining on her, and she turned and looked at me and just said shhh, putting her finger up to her mouth, and shush me back to sleep, and under the covers I go. Right? And, you know, I could feel that something was in the house.

It continued dropping off a little bit in my teen years because I was so busy, you know, with the being social and with my friends, and then it picked up later, late teens, early twenties, starting to open up again. And that’s what led me to massage school and polarity therapy and core shamanism in my early twenties. And that really helped me, you know, look at my gifts and how I worked. And I had a teacher that helped me be aware of what my gifts were, my clairaudience and clairsentience and clairvoyance. And, later, I would learn about, claircognizance from another teacher in my late twenties and early thirties when I found a 4 year program based on Barbara Brennan’s work and shadow work and Reiki, you know, Master we got during the program and that sort of thing, and really helped open me up to who I was. And, you know, being able to continue to know when spirit was in the room and, you know, that sort of thing continued on to this day, and it continues to open up as I age as well.

Linda Lang:
I think all of us would really like to hone our intuition even more. You mentioned being able to sense when a spirit is in the room. Can you talk a little bit about what signs would indicate we have company?

Liz Peterson:
Yes. Of course. Yes. This has been an ongoing thing for me. It really is a felt sense for me and a knowing. So that clairsentience and claircognizance, that clear feeling and clear knowing. When you walk in, and all of a sudden, you know, your body might be lighting up, or your sight might be directed over to a chair in the corner of the room. I remember I was at a workshop about 5 or 6 years ago, and I go upstairs to use the restroom, and I noticed, you know, I’m looking, I’m like, oh, there’s a woman sitting in the chair in the window, and I mentioned it to the people that were hosting.

Then women started showing up for the workshop, and one comes down and goes, “Did you know there was a woman sitting up in the chair, you know, upstairs?” Which was nice to get the validation, that secondary, you know, sight, you know, from someone else to validate what I was seeing. But it’s just this inner knowing that something is there. So if all of a sudden you find yourself feeling like, oh, I’m really feeling like something’s in the room, or I’m feeling like something’s staring at me, or possibly just in knowing, you know, oh, there’s someone here with me. Those are always that we can feel and sense that spirit is with us.

Linda Lang:
For myself, I’ll often see, orbs made out of light rather than an actual person, But I can communicate with that orb, which sounds kinda wonky, but it can answer, like, yes and no questions by, like, getting bigger or getting smaller. So it’s a, it’s a real experiment, I guess, in how to communicate. I’m confident that you have tips for all of us to develop that actual communication. It’s one thing to know that they’re there and another thing to start communicating.

Liz Peterson:
I think the first thing I would say would be to trust, to trust yourself. Trust has been an ongoing lesson for me in my life. I remember in my late twenties, early thirties being like, oh, no. I am just normal. I’m not seeing this or feeling this. It’s not real. You know? And society teaches that. Our parents say, “Oh, no.

It was just a dream,” or “Oh, no, that was your imagination.” So I think there’s a little bit of learning how to not doubt ourselves and to trust ourselves when we are experiencing these things, because we’ve had those messages that it is just our imagination. And what we know when we get on a spiritual path is that our imagination is a gateway to reality. There’s more than our imagination because we’re getting these signs and symbols and feelings all the time from the universe, and we’ve lost that society that teaches us how to pay attention to our gut feeling, or pay attention when we get those goosebumps, or pay attention when we have a coincidence or a synchronicity in our life, or to pay attention if we’re a visual person, if we’re getting, you know, little mini movies in our head. It’s not just about our life. It’s about the people around us also. So learning how to trust ourselves.

And then, second thing I wanna say is start meditating, get quiet, and pay attention. Start listening. Get quiet so we can kinda pause and step back and move our literal mind out of the way and start to pay attention to not only ourselves, but our environments in a new way.

Linda Lang:
Yeah. And it is a journey, so it’s something that doesn’t typically happen instantaneous, although it can, I’m sure. You can just open up and be almost overwhelmed with with gifts. You were fortunate enough to be very awake as a young child. You saw your sister’s spirit guide sitting beside her at the bed. Was she standing? She was standing, wasn’t she?

Liz Peterson:
She was sitting. She was sitting. Yeah. Sitting by her pillow, looking out the window. And I go back and forth whether that was my grandmother or not.

Linda Lang:
Because it can be, right? It can be a crossed over loved one or it can be a guide. Do you have any tips on how to know the difference? How to know the difference between a guide or a crossover loved one?

Liz Peterson:
Oh, good question. So a a crossover loved one is going to feel familiar. You’re going to see their face in your mind, or you might smell their perfume, or maybe they smoked. Maybe you get a whiff of that cigarette smoke or cigar smoke. There’s gonna be a lovingness to it. There’s also a lovingness to our angels and spirit guides as well. I do wanna kind of highlight that that there is a little bit of a comparison. But for me, it’s a knowing that it is my mother or a knowing that it is an angel, or it is a guide that’s stepping forward.

And I am a very visual person. So I do get an image in my mind, you know, when I’m doing sessions, or sitting in meditation, or having sacred space. That differentiation, if you’re a visual person, comes quite easily. Whether, you know, you’re going to see an angel, you’re going to see a guide, you’re going to see your loved one. As far as feeling, what did your loved one feel like in your life when they were alive? They’re going to impress upon you feelings that you felt when you were around them. They’re going to press upon feelings of what your relationship felt like when you were with them. You might feel secure.

You might feel that overwhelming love. You might send someone kissing your cheek or holding your hand or just standing present with you. I know a lot of times I feel something over my right shoulder. You know, it’s Halloween, and I had just finished doing readings all day in Tacoma. And, I could sense mom was sitting with me in the car. You know? So I’m like, “Hi, Mom. I’m glad you know that you’re with me.” It’s just like that sense that there’s more than me in the car and then tapping into my visual aspect of myself and seeing in my mind’s eye, you know, that my mother is with me in the car.

Linda Lang:
And it’s so natural and easy for you that you can still carry on your daily tasks and know that you’re connected.

Liz Peterson:
Yes. I remember a long time ago, let me know if we’re in Poulsbo, Washington, and the kids are at school, and I’m doing laundry, and we had our little neighborhood spirit in the house. The kids and I used to call him Bob, and, you know, I’d go downstairs and just have that sense feeling that somebody is there. And I remember just saying, you know, if I didn’t wanna bother with her, or I felt uncomfortable because I’m in the house alone, I’d say, Bob, I know you’re there, but just leave me alone today. I’m going about my business. You know?

So if anybody out there is feeling uncomfortable about feeling a presence, just ask them to step back or go away. And if you’re feeling like it’s menacing or not friendly, you know, I recommend saying go back to your own vibration or pull in your own spiritual self. You know, if you are affiliated with a religion, you know, do prayer or something like that. You can use that to shoo away whatever is not wanted in the house.

Linda Lang:
So there’s 2 things that I’m taking from what you’ve said so far that I think can trip people up. One of them being trusting what we’re getting. And the other one, you mentioned when you were a teenager, you didn’t leave the space to receive, so you were were busy with life. I think those are probably the 2 biggest obstacles is leaving the space and then trusting what you’re getting. Are there any roadblocks that might prevent us from connecting and getting messages?

Liz Peterson:
Oh, good question. I would say just getting our mind out of the way. You know, we’ve been taught. We’ve been programmed that these things aren’t real. And if we get curious and we allow ourselves to open up to possibilities other than just this physical self, you know, then we can welcome in and have that awareness that there’s something more to it and just being open to it. I think it’s just, you know, that curiosity part, allowing that inner child to come out and get curious and play and think, oh, when I saw that leaf on the ground, that looked like a heart. And then I thought of my sister, could that have been my sister, you know, with me in that moment, letting me know that she was sending me, you know, this visual of this leaf that looked like a flower. When I was coming in from outside, there’s a puddle in my driveway and it’s in the shape of a heart.

And it’s my, one of my sister’s birthdays today. And one of the ways that our deceased sister communicates with us is hearts. So, you know, when you see something like that, and then all of a sudden you think of a loved one, know that that’s related. So it’s just kind of getting ourselves out of the way, you know, and opening up to all of those possibilities. I like to call it the magic in life, and I really do adore all of the magic in life.

Linda Lang:
I think you were reading my mind because as you were talking, I kept hearing it’s the magic in life. Right? It’s perfect.

Liz Peterson:
It really is.

Linda Lang:
So you have a few people in your family that are crossed over. Do you interact with them much, or do they just come in for a short visit so you know they’re there?

Liz Peterson:
Short visits, I would say. Since my mother passed away last year in February, she was really communicating from across the veil after she passed away one thing after another, sending me hummingbirds and dragonflies and butterflies and song lyrics, you know, I would hear when I’m driving in the car, or I’m waking up with a short, you know, line of the song, you know, repeating over in my head. That’s the way that she communicated, you know, with me in those messages. Dream visitation are a part of how I receive as well, so those are also fun. After my sister passed away, she would do a thing where the phone would ring at midnight, which was really fun.

Linda Lang:
Yes. Really fun. Yeah.

Liz Peterson:
And I tried to debunk it. You know, I looked up telephone numbers and there were, you know, nothing coming in, you know, associated with the number, and the number led to nothing. And it was repetitive. It happened all the time.

Linda Lang:
I know when my mom passed on, she would ring my sister’s doorbell. My sister lives out in the country. There are no houses near her. There were no cars. There were no people walking down the road. There was nothing there, and yet that doorbell would ring.

Liz Peterson:
Wow. That is amazing. And they do. They play with electronics. My mom has the printer cycle every now and then. At my last place, I didn’t have good water, so I had water brought in, and the water container, the bubbles would go up at 3 o’clock in the morning, her wake me up. It’s really fun the way they show up, knocks on doors, and that sort of thing. It’s fun.

Linda Lang:
Maybe they show up a lot through the night because that’s when we’re quiet enough to notice.

Liz Peterson:
I find that too. If you’re a dreamer and you work with dreams, you know that that space between awake and asleep is that hypnagogic state, that state where we go into that theta brainwave. So in that state, we’re more susceptible to hearing when my medium mystic abilities started coming back online. That was one of the ways that it presented itself. When I was drifting off to sleep, I would start hearing voices and like, kind of wake up and go, what was that? Was that voices that I heard? You know? And when I’m first waking up, I’ve heard my name called Lizabeth or wake up or, you know, whispers or something that sounds like static. And if people are hearing static, that’s just spirit trying to communicate with you, but your inner hearing isn’t attuned well enough to hear it, but we can work on that, kind of open that up so it goes from being static to actual voices. So aside from it being just

Linda Lang:
to having spirit communication in our lives? How can it help us?

Liz Peterson:
Oh, it helps me all the time. I feel like I’m cocreating in life. Even before this podcast, I lit a candle and I asked where my angels and guides to continue to guide me and support me. So I invite them into my life all the time to help me, to guide me, to support me, to help me in this, that, or the other that I have going on. It’s also a connection to the other side. It teaches us that our life goes on. It gives our life meaning. It we know that it’s more than just this physical reality, that we are spirit.

And our spirit, our energy will continue. We’ll move on, and we’ll possibly go on to learn on the other side, or reincarnate again, possibly to learn on this side. I think it’s a huge benefit to have our intuition, to be able to pay attention or set our intention to pay attention to all of the little coincidences and synchronicities that come into our life that actually benefit us. If we have that awareness and we’re paying attention, it only benefits what the next best thing is for us. It’s like receiving little bread crumbs here and there from a friend who says the right thing or an email or something that we see online that just happens to be perfect for what we’re experiencing.

Or we have a dream, you know, that has to relate to our life. You know, it comes in many ways, and I think it’s just a benefit to our lives, to be able to open up and tap into our intuition, to have this communication with their loved ones, if they have a message for us, break crumbs, as I said before, to what that next thing is for us, or maybe what we should or shouldn’t do. You know, sometimes family can step in or loved one spirit can step in and, you know, give us a sign that maybe that’s a no for us, or possibly that, you know, a door is going to open and walk through that and see what the possibilities are with that.

Plus I think death is that next thing that we have to sort of drop the illusion around, you know, that death is the end. And I think awakening to that there is really no such thing as death, that our energy does go on, is that next portal to kind of opening up in consciousness.

Linda Lang:
That’s a big portal because we have so much programming around it.

Liz Peterson:
We really do.

Linda Lang:
Liz, do you think that when we’re going through really difficult challenging times that our guides and our angels and our loved ones are trying to steer us a little bit more? That maybe the veil is a little bit closer in those times when we’re really, really challenged in life?

Liz Peterson:
100%. I went through a divorce and a separation 5 years ago, and I’m a person that received feathers, right? When I’m on a walk, I find a feather, but this was insane. The amount of feathers that I received all over the house. I remember one time I was making a smoothie in the kitchen, and I turned to get the oat milk out of the refrigerator and turned back, and there was a feather on my blender. So I think that they are trying to let us know that they’re there and they are supporting us. Every time I found a feather, I knew that I was not alone and that I was being supported through my difficulty, through my heartache, through that dark night. Right? After my mother passed away, in weeks prior, that source, spirit, all that is, had placed things in my life that I would need after she passed away. And that was really mind opening for me to know that it’s not just support in the moment, that they’re actually supporting us and setting up things in our lives before we actually have something happen.

Liz Peterson:
And if I look back pre-separation between my ex-husband and I can see where things were put in place, even after, you know, I had signed up for a course, you know, that happened months later, and it just happened to fall 3 weeks after. That’s the perfect time. And it was around love and understanding and managing our emotions. It was the perfect thing that I needed, and I had signed up for that months ago.

Linda Lang:
It’s really amazing when you connect the dots. It’s too bad that we don’t know at that time, but I guess that would take the magic of a life. Right?

Liz Peterson:
It would, wouldn’t it? And I think it’s still magic, though. Right, Linda? You know, when we know that we are gonna be provided for, that we are not alone, that that magic is gonna happen, that we’re gonna see that coincidence. We’re gonna see that that synchronicity. We’re gonna see those words come out of our friend’s mouth that it’s just what we need to hear. You know, we’re gonna find that feather, see that butterfly, and think of our mother, or have the printer cycle in the middle of the night, or the bubbles in the water container, or whatever it may be, you know, the ringing of the doorbell, you know, it’s magic. And when we open up to that, then there’s an expectation of it. And we live our life from that expectation that we have support. We have love in our life.

Liz Peterson:
We’re not alone, and that we are much more than this physical reality.

Linda Lang:
And it’s actually an invitation for more magic.

Liz Peterson:
I love that.

Linda Lang:
Liz, what would you advise if someone’s really wanting to open up that channel and they’re meditating, they’re making space, they’ve set their intent, but it feels like nothing is coming. How can they keep that focus of attention and the confidence that it will come when it feels like it’s not there?

Liz Peterson:
No. That can be so frustrating, Linda. Thank you for asking that question, and our minds can really get in the way. Then sometimes when our minds are in the way, it actually blocks us because we want it so bad that we’re not able to surrender our energy to our experience. And I also wanna say, ask. Ask for a sign that someone is near you, that a loved one is near you. Mom, show me a sign that you’re here, and then surrender.

And I was telling her everything that I had learned about angels. This was years ago, right? 23 years ago, and pull into the parking lot, and I say, okay, let’s ask for a sign. So I say out loud, and you can also say it in your head if you want. So angels give us a sign as you’re here with us, and we go into the nursery, and I have my baby with me, and he has white blonde hair. And she looks like, she goes, “Oh my gosh, look at that angel hair.” How beautiful. And mom and I just looked at each other and smiled because that was the answer. That was the sign, woman comes up and says angel.

That’s really all it is. It’s asking for the sign, asking for the communication, and then let go. Just let yourself relax.

Linda Lang:
That’s the perfect example, Liz, because so often, we expect some momentous sign like lightning strikes us or the angel appears right before us, but they can be so, so subtle and just interwoven with our everyday circumstances.

Liz Peterson:
Yes. It’s so fun and so beautiful when that opens up.

Linda Lang:
Liz, where can we send people who want to know more about your work and how they can develop their intuitive skills?
